Banned in Madhya Pradesh!
Sanjay Leela Bhansali meets parliamentary committee…
Threats to cut off Deepika Padukone’s nose…
Yes, I am talking about the Padmavati controversy. Haven’t we had enough of it?
Don’t judge me. I am not saying that the controversy is not worth the headlines. Artistic freedom and these threats from Rajput Karni Sena is definitely worth debating, but not at the cost of the crisis that people of our country is facing.
Here are some issues that missed making the headlines because we were busy fighting the battle for creative rights with Sanjay Leela Bhansali:
#1 Onion price rise
Winters often see a decrease in vegetable prices but looks like that is not happening this year. Homemakers to restaurant owners, this sudden hike in the price have gotten everyone worried.
Rs 80 per kg!
Reason: Well CPM is blaming PM Modi policies, and the reason cited by farmers is untimely rains and surge in export.
#2 Price of egg goes high
Did you also notice that in the last month, the shopkeeper quoted a new price for a dozen eggs? From Rs 30 to Rs 42 for half dozen eggs within a week.
According to a report in Business Today, egg prices jumped up by over 40 percent in the last month.
#3 Nation-wide farmers protest
Thousands of farmers gathered at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on November 20 asking for loan waiver and fair prices for their production. Farmers from over 184 groups across the country participated in the protest walk, but hardly any prime time show paid attention to them.
#4 Paradise Papers
About 18 months after Panama Papers, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists leaked another trove of data on how big corporates and rich individuals moved money to and fro from 19 tax havens. But the discussion died down within a day or so.
#5 Judge Loya’s mysterious death
CBI judge BH Loya who was hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, in which BJP chief Amit Shah is the prime accused, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in 2014. A story in The Caravan magazine has made some shocking claims about his death. Will we ever find the answers?
#6 Corrupt police officials
A case that shook the entire country: How did young Pradyuman die in school washroom?
While there are still so many loopholes in the CBI investigation, it was a report in Firstpost that makes one question about how police work. Conductor Ashok Kumar, who was arrested for Pradyuman’s murder, said that he was forced to confess to the crime he had not committed.
Another report in Mirror Now hints at how inconsiderate police department is. A rape survivor in Maharashtra’s Latur district was asked to pay a bribe to the police officer to register an FIR.
#7 Pollution in Delhi
Smog in Delhi is an yearly affair. Why don’t we have a proper solution yet?
#8 Women safety
Kirron Kher was not wrong in saying that Chandigarh gangrape victim should not have boarded the auto when she saw three men sitting in it. When the government has failed to implement the right laws to ensure women safety, it is us women who need to make sure that we are safe. Kher did not say that women should not travel alone or work but meant that we cannot change the mentality of people. Why not create awareness?
#9 North Korea’s nuclear missile test
North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) called the Hwasong-15 two days back; most dangerous missile so far. Even after knowing North Korea’s history of putting the world in danger, why is everybody silent?
#10 Legalisation of gay marriage
Another country has legalised gay marriage while homosexuals in India continue to fight for their rights by taking out pride parades.
#11 Poverty in India
Ivanka Trump, who recently visited India for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Hyderabad, said that PM Modi led government lifted over 130 million people out of poverty. However, World Bank data from 2016 states that this happened between 1994-2012. Well, who is responsible for the change? PM Modi or the UPA is a different debate altogether. What we need to talk about is Mission 2022. Will India be corruption and poverty free by 2022 as predicted by NITI Aayog?
